Lost in translation

A Sunday morning after a crazy first month at work, I sat in my office with my new friend Tim, ravenously hungry.
.
“Let’s go to a hotel” I said to him.
.
Tim looked up surprised and grew uncomfortable as I eagerly waited for his response. He was obviously struggling to muster the right answer.
.
“Like, what do you mean…you want to get a room?”

A trip to temple

வருசா வருசம் திருநெல்வேலிக்கு குலதெய்வ வழிபாட்டு விழாவுக்குக் கூட்டிட்டுப் போவாங்க எங்க வீட்டுல. That didn’t stop me from becoming an aethist, neither did it catalyse it for me in becoming an aethist.  திருச்செந்தூர் எனக்கு எப்பவும் பிடிச்ச இடமா  போனதுக்கு  கண்டிப்பா  இந்த  trips  காரணம்.  

அமெரிக்காவில் கோயிலுக்குப் போறதப் பகிர்ந்துக்கிறார் இங்க.

Visiting a Hindu temple in the US has never been a religious experience for me.
.
The mantras chanted by the purohit are beamed up from a laptop using an LCD projector. The priest has a small microphone clipped on his vest. The place is bristling with technology…….After the havan, a well meaning old gentleman makes a PowerPoint presentation explaining what went on in English.
.
All of this is nothing like the temple experience that I grew up with. No one made any effort to translate what the priest was saying…….There was no pressure to make it an educational experience.
.
As a Hindu and a parent do I have an obligation to make her take it a lot more seriously ? I don’t know.

The pursuit of Happyness – movie review

I also found a lot of similarities between The Pursuit of Happyness and the Indian flick Guru. Even if they seem to be set in times separated by decades and in locations separated by the seven seas, at one level both Chris Gardner and Gurukant Desai are about the same thing – about breaking the shackles of poverty, about pursuing one’s dreams, about making a lot of money, and about succeeding in life.

……

In both the movies though there is one aspect that just doesn’t seem to work for me – for both Chris and Guru the pursuit of happiness is in making it, success was in building business empires, in becoming multi-millionaires. While I understand that without money to cover the basic needs in life, happiness is indeed elusive, this all out emphasis on money and more money is something I can’t relate to. But then that is me.
Even though it is painful to watch, The Pursuit of Happyness is worth a dekko. You will get out of the theatre feeling good and hopeful.

சுந்தர்

Tear Jerker என்று அடர்தகட்டு முகப்பில் பார்த்தேன். Tear Beaker ஏ தேவைப்படும்போல அப்படி ஒரு சோகம். அந்தப் படம் மட்டும் அப்படி முடிந்திருக்காவிட்டால் என் 42″ ப்ளாஸ்மாவை தூக்கிப் போட்டு உடைத்திருப்பேன். சூர்யா டென்ஷனாகிப்போய், “This is just a Mov…vie. Why you are crying Dad..? என்றான்.

அவன் எத்த்னை மில்லியன் சம்பாதித்தான் என்பது முக்கியமல்ல. கஷ்டம் வந்த நேரத்தில் அவன் எப்படி நடந்து கொண்டான் என்பதுதான் படத்தில் எனக்குப் பாடம். மிக சுலபமாக ஒரு சமூக விரோதியாயிருக்கக் கூடிய அளவுக்கு அழுத்தங்கள் வந்தபோதும், தாங்கிக் கொண்டு கடமையே கண்ணாக…

My favorite scene was the one in which Chris Gardner turns to his young son after having belittled the boy’s basketball fancies and tells him “Don’t ever let somebody tell you you cannot do something”. This film did not just alter the way ‘happiness’ is spelled, it changed the way it is perceived.

Provoked – movie review

First, the actors – Aishwarya, needless to say, is a complete miscast. Though her sincerity is touching, you come out believing she is much better doing a Kajra re. Her deadpan expression fails to capture the trauma and torture borne by the character.

Provoked didn’t work for me, but I understand it was a movie that should have been made. If only Jag Mundhra had truly done another Bawandar!

சமுதாயக் கூட்டுக் கல்வி

சமுதாய கூட்டுக் கல்வி முறை-Social Learning Theory

கடந்த 30 வருடங்களாக இந்த சமுதாய கல்வியின் புதிய பல பரிணாமங்கள் தெளிவுபட ஆரம்பித்திருக்கின்றன. ஒரு பழக்கத்தை பற்றி தெரிந்து கொள்ளுதலும் அது விளைவிக்க கூடிய நல்ல அல்லது தீய விளைவுகளை பற்றியும் தெரிந்து கொள்ளல் ஒரு மனிதனுடைய பழக்கத்தில் சில மாற்றங்களை விளைவிக்கிறது. உதாரணமாக வேகமாக சாலையில் வாகனம் செலுத்திய ஒருவனை காவலர் ஒரம் கட்டி அபராதம் விதிப்பதை கண்டால் நாமும் நமது வேகத்தை குறைக்கிறோம். இல்லையெனில் வேகம் பற்றிய அறிவிப்புகள் இருப்பினும், காவலர் இல்லை எனில் பலர் வேகத்தை குறைப்பதில்லை.

வயித்துக்குள் பட்டாம்பூச்சி

ரெம்ப ஊறிப்போன பின்னும் வயித்துக்குள்ல பட்டாம்பூச்சி பறக்குறது சகஜம். என்னோட முதல்வகுப்பில் 13முறை குச்சியை (pointer) கீழேபோட்டேன்னு என்னோட மாணவ வானரம் எண்ணிச்சொல்லுச்சு. :-) 

சின்மயி flmfare விழாவில் தொகுத்து வழங்கிய தன்னோட முதல் அனுபவத்தைப் பகிர்ந்துக்கிறாங்க.

I was slightly nervous as it was a live event and there are no retakes. But hey, there is always a first time. And probably there can no better place to try it out for the first time than an event like this huh?

இன்னோரு குழந்தை பெத்துக்கோயேன்

அம்மணியின் க்விக் டேல்ஸ் (சீக்கிரக் கதை-ன்னு சொல்லலாமா?) பிரபலமானவை.

p.s. Don’t put off having a second child. Your mother is getting old. And the winter here is very painful on her knees.
