Murugan Devotional song remixed…

Posted by The Visitor

The original –
Disclaimer: I am not sure if this was originally sung by KBS or Bengalooru Ramani Ammal.

Some anecdotal notes about KBS.

‘I will not leave Madras without meeting her!’ declared Lata Mangeshkar who had come to Gemini studios for a recording.

The “fair” society

I was one of the very few dark skinned girls who had never bought a single tube of fairness cream. Perhaps it was not just my skin colour that needed fixing! The cliche, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” turned out to be true in my case, as the ugly betty of the Indian society is considered as a gorgeous pretty woman by the western society. I still encounter both the treatments in my life. Still Indians look at me with amazement at the way I carry myself even after having a mirror in my house. 🙂 I certainly do not miss a single second of enjoyment when heads turn towards me to give me a second look when I enter a room  / hall full of British men. 😉

Though looking good does influence one’s confidence, is it “fair” to advocate that lightening one’s skin colour will make them look good?

Neha interprets the colour perceptions and their similarities in two societies.

Mariono analyses the ad in which the handsome cream comes to the market.

India celebrates independence day

Delhi’s Red Fort echoed to the sound of cannon as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh raised India’s flag, where the British flag was lowered forever in 1947.

Spirit of India

Nine-year-old Vipashayana Tanwar is among the lucky few invited to watch the celebrations.

The British took away our gold and minerals and everything else

Vipashayana Tanwar

Her cheeks painted in the colours of the Indian flag, she says she is “very excited” that she will be able to see and hear the Prime Minister.

A student of fourth standard, she is yet to learn about the independence movement, but she does have some ideas of her own.

“I know we are celebrating 60 years of our independence. We are free from the British now. The British came here and told the Indians – you cannot manage your country,” she says.

“Then, they took away all our gold and minerals and everything else,” she adds.

Pakistan marks 60th anniversary

Celebrations are under way across Pakistan to mark the 60th anniversary of independence from Britain and the creation of the country.

Pakistan and India won independence from Britain in August 1947 following a nationalist struggle of three decades.

What is the legacy of partition?

Have your say by following the above link.

The story of Pakistan

The story of Pakistan is one of remorseless tug and pull between the civilian and military rulers on the one hand, and the liberal and religious forces on the other

Story of Indian Muslims

So why has the lot of Indian Muslims remained miserable after six decades of independence?

Muslim women in India

Half of Muslims women in India cannot read or write

For one, it is the sheer apathy and ineptitude of the Indian state which has failed to provide equality of opportunity in health, education and employment.

This has hurt the poor – including the Muslim poor who comprise the majority of the community – most.

Mahesh Rangarajan says poverty and “absence of ameliorative policies” has hurt India’s Muslims most.

India Travel experience

He said: “When threatened, talk to a local woman”. ………: i.e. a drunk man in the upper berth who won’t leave you alone, and his two henchmen below you. A young woman not only rescued me but arranged my berth swap, shared a taxi, …..I wish men in India would just leave me alone. At this point I am contemplating the “sorry me Japan no English” move. It’s that bad right now

 Madras in Two parts

Contrary to the according-to-the-guidebook European traveller’s declaration, I found Chennai to be a lovely, good sized city. It’s true, you know, what they say about the south being laid back and hassle free. In many ways, Chennai feels like a larger version of the Little India I know and love, more so than the rest of India, because of the shared Tamil culture. Although I’d never been here, it feels like I’ve been here… well, forever. And that’s a good thing

And more… Feel free to browse other posts on India travel.

Child marriage stopped by pupils

Classmates of a 13-year-old Bangladeshi school girl due to enter a forced marriage have united to stop the ceremony going ahead, police say.

………

Correspondents say that the stand of the schoolgirls has created a stir in the town.

Like many other parts of the country – young people in Satkhira are deferential to their parents and seldom question their commands.

The Pelican Brief

is there a political angle to these murders? were politicians involved? what were the cases these journalists working on before they were killed-is there a common thread? how come the modus operandi in all the cases was so similar?was the possibility of the same ppl being involved (bcoz of the mo) in the murders ever explored? was the carjacking just a cover up?
